Through the years I experienced that evidence is requested. In 2007 in the Netherlands we started a unique scientific study with 3 hospitals. During a period of 1 year 380 patients participated in the study. The group patients (190) which used the Health Buddy show 42% less risk for a clinical admission. With more than 80% every day use of the Health Buddy it shows that the patient doesn’t want to be without a Health Buddy.

At this moment I can’t share more positive results which are significant proved in this study because these will be publicated in a scientific magazine before summer.
Based on these nice results we have already two more hospitals which choose for the Health Buddy. I am sure that there will follow more during this year

Although there are always frustrations, there is another way to look at this, which is that the Netherlands was the first EU country to move forward with the HealthBuddy, which was very forward looking and should be acknowledged. Credit for that goes to Sananet, Paul, and a team of very forward thinking people.

Changing Healthcare service providing and provisioning is an uphill, painful, battle. It does not come easy – this is not a Dutch problem, or an American phenomenon, or a cultural issue. We’ve had the same problem here in the US, even for the organizations we’ve saved millions and millions of dollars each year.

It’s a slow moving, highly constrained, conservative market when you are selling to those carrying the risk, be it government or industry.

This is the risk – but the reward, both in successful business and the health of our patients, is well worth it.

Sommige ontwikkelingen verdienen een substantiële innovatieve injectie in plaats van een incrementele afwachtende houding: over je eigen schaduw heen springen. Dat geldt zeker voor de Health Buddy. Ik deel de perceptie van Paul Epping en doet mij denken aan de cri-de-coeur van Guus Schrijvers & Nico Oudendijk, cum suis m.b.t. innovaties in de zorg in Nederland (beschreven in het in 2002 verschenen boek: “Moderne patiëntenzorg in Nederland: van kennis naar actie”). Lessen voor de toekomst lijkt me. En aangezien de toekomst altijd naar je toe komt: lessen voor nu!

Als initiatiefnemer van de Health Buddy heb ik waanzinnig veel energie gestopt in een erg goed product. Veel telemedicine producten zijn op dit principe gebaseerd. Het is onvoorstelbaar tegen welke weerstand opgebokst moest worden. Onderzoeksrapporten over voordelen mochten niet baten, een succesvol experiment in regio Utrecht, met zeer enthousiaste patiënten, die zich er zeer veilig bij voelden, waren niet genoeg. Na dit, door het astmafonds gesubsidieerde project, is er op beperkte schaal nog gebruik van gemaakt. De schat aan dialogen is dit moment volledig in een interactieve webapplicatie omgebouwd en heeft opnieuw aangetoond in het AZM, dat er minder patienten hoeven te worden opgenomen, terwijl het aantal heropnames met 60% daalde. Chapeau voor Sananet dat ze door zijn gegaan. Ik was al afgehaakt door de onvoorstelbare kortzichtigheid van de overheid en zorgverzekeraars. Klap op de vuurpijl was toch wel dat vorig jaar op een van de ZIP cafe’s de Health Buddy als innovatie werd aangemerkt. Nou, die versie was hopeloos verouderd…. Mijn ervaring, o.a. hiermee, is dat we in Nederland eerst heel veel en heel lang willen discussiëren, vaak zonder enige kennis van zaken, om uiteindelijk te roepen dat het toch niet zo’n goed plan is. De zorg in Nederland roept wel dat we met innovaties de problemen (lees: vergrijzing en chronische aandoeningen) kunnen oplossen, maar als er een innovatie is worden geweldige barrières opgeworpen. We zijn zo behoudend…… De Health Buddy is daar een perfect voorbeeld van. We zijn, op de achterkant van een bierviltje, in 8 jaar zo’n 4 miljard aan besparingen misgelopen…..
